EDIT: I didn't resize teh pics. They were huge, and i have to leave. I'll come back and fix.

In anticipation of moving into my first home and having a room dedicated to the studio, I've been thinking about a lot of DIY projects. I want the studio to double as an entertainment room, so I need the room to remain presentable to guests and not just an ugly electronics room.

Late last year I found some cubicle partitions in the basement of my workplace. I snuck away to investigate later, knowing that not only do cubicles separate space, but also attempt to dampen noise. I checked it out, hoping it that there would be high density insulation in them, and I was right. I asked about them and was able to take them home, disassemble and confirm that it was about 5 pcf, making it the equivalent to Owens Corning 705. This density is perfect for high and midrange frequency absorption and also more effective in the bass range than 703, or 3 pcf insulation.

So I ended up with some odd shaped pieces of insulation. After thinking on it, I ended up making two 2 ft x 4 ft x 3 in panels for the side First Reflection Zones. I used red oak wood, sanded and stained, and a nice "oriental forest" looking design for the cloth. I've seen countless acoustic treatment projects that just look uglier than hell. I've also seen some that incorporate the panels as furniture, seeking to make them look as presentable as effective.

Below were some 12 in x 16 in x 2 in panels. There are 16 total, with half the lighter green and half the darker. They will be scattered about the studio.

I've not yet placed the panels on the wall or taken any readings of the room. That will come in the future. Thanks for looking, I just wanted to share.

Upcoming projects include a DIY wooden floor rack with wheels so I can get my racked equipment off the desk, and a DIY preamp or some kind of effects processor. I have a nice enclosure and my brother started making a guitar pedal and I thought, hey, why not.
